經過數世紀來不斷改良，日本住宅設計已能完美利用空間塑造光影對比。深檐連結昏暗的室內及室外生氣勃勃的花園。谷崎潤一郎的《贊美陰影》強調半明半暗之美，設計體現「庭屋一如」的哲學，強調建築與花園之間的和諧。
