Canvas Beneath
Transforming the undercroft of the Kwun Tong Bypass into a living urban gallery, this project reimagines infrastructure as a site of memory and connection. Thirty ten-meter-tall columns along the promenade are wrapped in monumental murals—each portraying a figure from Kowloon East’s layered history, from salt workers of the Ming era to textile artisans and contemporary citizens. Playing with human scale and spatial rhythm, the paintings restore dignity to everyday lives once hidden in the city’s margins. Augmented by interactive AR filters, the space becomes both archive and playground—where art, community, and place quietly converge beneath the city’s flow.
