Forest Gradient
Designed for Hokkaido’s humid subarctic climate, this timber office redefines the relationship between nature and workspace through layered environmental transitions. A triple-glazed perimeter filled with low-E argon gas maintains insulation, while a central skylight channels daylight and wind deep into the interior. Radiant air conditioning powered by groundwater creates a gradient of microclimates—from rooftop garden to terrace to office—allowing users to choose their comfort zone. The fire-resistant larch structure, reinforced with diagonal columns and tension rods, pioneers a new seismic-resistant wooden shell system. Locally sourced materials, rooftop vegetation, and upcycled furniture together form a regenerative link between forest and city.
