Traces of Stillness
In Suzhou’s historic quarter, a late Qing garden has been carefully adapted into a discreet boutique hotel. Once serving as administrative offices, the three-courtyard compound is reconfigured to guide guests through layered thresholds of garden and residence, restoring the site’s original spatial rhythm. A secondary timber framework refines the interiors, recalling Jiangnan’s wooden vernacular while maintaining clarity and restraint. Courtyards are retained as shared yet private extensions of the rooms, framing light, air, and quiet reflection. With minimal structural intervention, the design preserves much of the original fabric—transforming a heritage site into an intimate retreat grounded in continuity.
