Veil of Water
A once-abandoned hotel at Zhouzhuang’s gateway is transformed through a new anodised aluminium façade—an intricate “curtain” composed of modular slats and concealed rain chains. The panels, parametrically calibrated, curve and taper to soften the building’s mass while reflecting the canal’s changing light. Beneath this veil, a sheltered corridor framed by a 50×100mm grid structure extends across walls and ceilings, integrating seating inspired by traditional meirenkao (leaning bench). Rainwater flows through fine seams into hidden gutters, merging drainage with design. Together, these precise, layered elements reframe the building’s scale, harmonising its industrial shell with the delicate rhythm of the water town.
