    Letters in Light

Balancing memory and modernity, this boutique hotel transforms a 1930s remittance office on the edge of Singapore’s Chinatown into a layered dialogue between past and present. The conserved shophouse façade meets a new rear volume clad in perforated aluminium, its surface inscribed with fragments of real remittance letters—words once carried across oceans, now filtering sunlight and shadow through guest rooms. Copper-green gardens unfold between old and new, planted with nutmeg, pepper, and gambier to recall Singapore’s trading past. Inside, recycled timber and Chinese Art Deco details ground the architecture in craft and intimacy—where heritage breathes quietly within contemporary life.
