Rust and Reverie
Concealed within the dense fabric of Dalian, this creative enclave revives a forgotten industrial compound into a living archive of transformation. Six aging structures—once offices, warehouses, and dormitories—are woven into a cohesive whole through an architectural gesture that redefines their fragmented geometry. The new design completes the U-shaped formation with an inward-facing courtyard, its perimeter articulated by walls, screens, and canopies that trace a quiet choreography of light and shadow. At its heart, a single rock anchors the plaza—a silent witness to the site’s layered histories. Corten steel wraps the renewed facades in a rusted patina that softens with time, its mutable surface recording the dialogue between decay and renewal. Inside, traces of the old persist: exposed brick, concrete scars, and raw beams converse with smooth plaster and muted tones. The result is a spatial palimpsest—where architecture breathes memory, and time becomes the material of design.
