Cloud Courtyard
Suspended between history and modernity, this reimagined hutong courtyard transforms the rhythm of Beijing’s traditional Siheyuan into a fluid composition of light, shadow, and movement. The familiar eaves and walls that once enclosed private lives are reinterpreted through a series of continuous, curving corridors—architectural gestures that soften boundaries and invite public gathering. These sweeping arcs, replacing the rigidity of tiled roofs, reshape the skyline into an undulating silhouette reminiscent of drifting clouds. Beneath these corridors, shaded alcoves form an intimate network of communal spaces—a contemporary “urban common room” where the old city breathes anew. Above, the roof becomes a walkable island, elevating visitors into dialogue with the surrounding hutong fabric. The design dissolves the hierarchy between heritage and innovation, crafting an open framework that preserves memory while allowing the city’s spirit to evolve in motion.
