DFA Design for Asia Awards 2025 l Gold Award l Communication Design | Identity & Branding
Edge of the North
Born in Wakkanai, Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost prefecture, Kita no Hashi bakery distills the purity of its landscape into a brand language as elemental as its bread. The visual identity revolves around a single, sharp motif — the northernmost tip of Japan — rendered in black and white to echo the region’s snowy horizon and the simplicity of additive-free baking. Every detail, from packaging to uniforms, interior signage to bread bags, follows this restrained palette, celebrating clarity and authenticity. The logomark, abstract yet instantly recognisable, anchors the brand across media, while minimal typography and uncoated paper textures evoke honesty and craftsmanship. Within the shop, the monochrome aesthetic continues, white walls and pale timber contrast with the dark grain of baked crusts, allowing the bread itself to take centre stage. This seamless fusion of design, material, and place embodies the quiet resilience and understated strength of a bakery that has breathed new life into its northern hometown.
