DFA Design for Asia Awards 2022 l Silver Award l Spatial Design l Commercial & Showroom SpacesA DELICATE TRANSPARENCY
An old Beijing textile warehouse - a factory with red brick walls and a pitched roof built in the 1960s - has been transformed into a new showroom for domestic furniture brand, ZIIN. The architect sought to balance the existing site and its new function - exhibition and sales - by placing the freestanding intersecting square frames at a 45-degree angle to form independent figures. Between the entrance and south window is transparent and clad panels, and the sun shines through it into the wood-panelled building. The other panels are solid, and their diagonal relationship creates a new order, extending the perception of depth, and producing a visual spectacle.
