DFA Design for Asia Awards 2022 l Silver Award l Spatial Design l Home & Residential SpacesCALCULATED HARMONY
On a 212-square-metre site in a village outside Beijing stands a family home belonging to someone who wants to return to the countryside after years in the city. Traditional Chinese houses were built to accommodate a large family, but requirements have changed due to rapid urbanisation, and families have gone from multigenerational to nuclear. This project experiments with developing a new model for three small families planning to live together. The layout ensures enough space to maintain independent living, as well as common living areas, and inside the two-metre-high solid wall is a shared courtyard whose green landscape blends with the interiors.
