“Fragrance with Lotus Flowers” is the name of the installation suspended over the dancefloor, and conceived with the profundity and power of allusion that are fundamental to Japanese aesthetics. At its material level, the stage installation consists of more than 1,000 fine lines made with very thin strips of Japanese cypress, attached to an even more delicate metal latticework. The planar position and height of the strips are calculated using 3D modelling, and then attached, one by one, to the latticework to create a misty gradation of light. This meticulous labour compares to the traditional Japanese art of pruning, when gardeners adjust the density of branches and leaves to create a zen-like atmosphere. The lines are like rain drizzling down from the sky, looming over the stage like a fine mist, and enveloping the dancers in myriad forms of light and shadow as the installation produces the sense of space, mood, and ambience that is integral to any performance.
