Heaven’s Light
A funeral hall was built next to Kami-Ainoura Station, a small train station with two open-air side platforms in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. The funeral hall’s design was inspired by its proximity to the station. The hall leads to a covered passageway for the hearse that runs parallel to the railway track, and to the architect the funeral hall is an extension of the railway station. The funeral hall is equipped with a kitchen and other amenities. A wooden folded-plate roof makes the funeral hall blend in with the station and nearby private residences, and the gable windows created by the folds allow light to shine into the funeral hall from above. Called the Farewell Platform, the hall where the living assemble and the passageway through which the deceased depart.
