For the renovation of this landmark of China’s contemporary art scene, architects and designers put extra emphasis on implementing an entrance space that matches the institution’s stature. Once wedged into a dark corridor running through a narrow four-storey slab, the slab has been refaced with vibrant red stucco and gridded black windows. The ground floor has been demolished, leaving only the support columns to create visual lightness.
