Qing dynasty writer Shen Fu, wrote a collection of autobiographical essays entitled Six Records of a Floating Life about his life and marriage to Yunniang. A literary classic, the book offers an intimate memoir of family life and relationships, love, aesthetics, and society, through the eyes of a provincial scholar-official. In this new edition, since each of the six chapters covers a different topic, they were turned into six booklets, which can be folded to display the pages describing different periods. When the pages are fanned out into a ring, they express flowers that bloom and wither, alluding to the ups and downs of a lifetime. The footnotes are enlarged, and highlighted as randomly placed red dots, repeating the flower theme, and showing how the author accepted the cards life dealt him. The texture of the light, translucent, handmade paper complements this lyrical, sentimental journey that will resonate with many readers.
