Pinghu, a coastal city near Shanghai in Zhejiang Province, is known regionally for its beautiful cherry blossom that announces the spring and its new beginnings and transformations, so cherry blossom has been chosen as the school flower and visual identity for the Pinghu Economic Development Zone Kindergarten, reinforcing its identity as a nurturing, welcoming place of learning. Animated petals of stylised cherry blossom morph into legs, giving cartoon characters their own personalities, and, drawn to form brushstrokes of Chinese characters, the petals become words and phrases used on the preschool’s signage, and printed on uniforms, bags, and other accessories to foster a community spirit. They are made into animated features too, and painted on doors and walls to stimulate the children’s sensory development.
