Moving Pictures

“Still and Motion” was the theme of the Hong Kong International Poster Triennial 2020. Along with other art directions, and strategic and design decisions, the question of whether “to print or not to print” is consequential, and defines and shapes the product. As the theme teases out creative tension between form and substance, it also reminds everyone in the art and design community that people are influenced by the message that comes across in the media. The visual identity and promotional materials for this major exhibition are composite works that use animated and still elements very cleverly. The stills evoke animated clip art from the early days of motion display on personal computers, and in their moving online reiterations they come alive to push the boundaries of printed posters. A logotype and custom typeface, which also hark back to early digital art, were also designed for the overall branding and marketing campaign, as well as signage in the exhibition venue.
