Five kilometres from downtown Beijing, an abandoned industrial complex on a neglected plot of land, now the former factories and warehouses have been repurposed as art and performance spaces. HeyTown Art Center, the 3,300 square-metre space houses a theatre with a seating capacity of 500, an exhibition hall, a double-floor linear gallery, a classroom, and a bookshop. The recent adaptation and renovation retain much of the original buildings’ industrial features, such as their saw-tooth shapes, corrugated aluminium cladding, and exposed brick walls.
