DFA Design for Asia Awards 2021 l Grand Award with Special Mention
Tackling Depopulation by a New Approach to Construction
In a pristine forest, where visitors can enjoy the mountains, a modern holiday cabin was built for visitors on holiday to help the local economy. What distinguished this project was a low-cost but high-performance Computer Numerical Control milling machine called ShopBot on-site, so building materials could be made from locally sourced timber, and a steep gabled roof house design was adopted. The precision milling machine allowed smaller, furniture-grade parts to be manufactured, and more people to participate in the construction. Like giant 3D puzzles, thousands of wood planks and joints were assembled without scaffolding, the ambiance is cosy, and linked to the surrounding forest.
