The exhibition catalogue, The Painted Screen: Past and Future, was published in China and contains academic essays, photos, and paintings of folding screens. The designer adopted a “books within a book” design in which several thinner books are bound in the main book, but can be spread out on a flat surface. Moreover, the books’ length-to-width ratio of 2:1 is similar to a typical screen, and the size and shape of the book are intended to evoke one. The main book is thread-bound with double folding, and the essays are printed horizontally, to be read from left to right. In the other booklets, the essays are printed vertically, to be read from right to left. The booklet of contemporary artworks depicting screens is embedded in the main book, but can also be separated.
