Reclaiming Rice Fields from Concrete Thanks to its fertile soil, favourable climate and abundant rainfall, Thailand is known as the rice basket of Asia. However, rampant urban sprawl has converted agricultural land to residential and industrial use and driven those who used to live off the land to cities large and small. TURF is an architectural intervention to reclaim agricultural land from concrete structures, and to illustrate how a farm and university can co-exist. The farm acts as a carbon sink to absorb the carbon dioxide from human activities and a layer of natural insulation material to lower the building’s temperature.
