In major cities all over the world, high concentrations of large concrete, glass and steel buildings are believed to be a leading cause of urban heat islands. In order to mitigate the adverse effects of rising temperatures, architects started to experiment with wood thanks to its flexibility in construction. In Tomiya in northeastern Honshu, Japan, Synegic Company Limited’s offices feature a massive polygonal roof entirely made of wood. The CLT panels and other timber used in construction are locally sourced, which reduces the building’s carbon footprint.
