In 1995, three residents from Shinkotoni, a residential neighborhood in Sapporo, Japan, formed a new dance team known as the Shinkotoni Tenburyujin, or the God of the Heavenly Dancing Dragon. To create a distinct identity to pave the way for future success, a new branding was created consisting the kanji character for ten or heaven written in calligraphy, and a rising sun painted in watercolour. The kanji character is composed of three stylised strokes, while the sun is not a perfect, solid circle, but a brush-painted, semi-transparent vermilion disc representing the sunrise. This aquarelle sun disc symbolises the dance group’s dedication to Japanese folk dance.
