The Scent of Wood

KiKiKi is a novelty product that takes the form of a prism pencil sharpener. Under closer examination, KiKiKi reveals a blade to shave away a pencil-like stick of natural fragrant wood. As the user puts away the wood stick, the fan-shaped shavings are left on an integrated receptacle, which is a circular dish designed to diffuse the wood scent. Besides indulging in olfactory pleasure, the device allows the user to appreciate the difference in hardness, sound, wood grain and color tone of each tree through the visual and auditory sensation that it produces. The wood shavings spread like a flower, illustrating the plastic beauty of wood. KiKiKi comes in a set, which comprises the fragrance-generating device, which is made of black cherry, a tray, which is made of walnut wood, as well as a collection of fragrant wood sticks, which may include Japanese cypress tree, Japanese cedar tree, Hiba arborvitae, Japanese fir tree, Japanese hemlock tree, or Yakushima cedar tree. Bringing urban dwellers closer to forests through scent, this lifestyle product also serves to raise awareness of forest conservation, as forests in Japan continue to be threatened. Working like a pencil sharpener, KiKiKi also brings back memories of childhood.
