Yin and Yang
Through their complementary concave and convex shapes, this sophisticated set of glasses and coasters work in perfect harmony. The coaster, made from Shirasu (magma ceramic), naturally absorbs condensation while boasting impressive deodorising and antibacterial properties. When a drink is poured, the glass’s unique protrusions create convection, enhancing the drink's aroma and balancing its flavour, eliminating the need for stirring. The combination of materials not only improves the drinking experience but also ensures practicality. The glass and coaster can be stacked separately for easy storage, while the coaster’s material helps deodorise cupboards and prevent mould. Additionally, the coaster separates smoothly from the glass when lifted, ensuring ease of use. Shirasu, sourced from a 25,000-year-old volcanic plateau in southern Japan, offers an eco-friendly alternative to diatomaceous earth, requiring no high-temperature processing. The project was made possible through collaboration with material experts, transcending traditional production methods and industries to achieve this remarkable design.
