Due to the lack of documentation of previous renovation works and ad hoc repairs, the Kyoto City Museum of Art building, Japan’s oldest public art museum, well-known for its Imperial Crown Style, has lost coherence over the years. The project for its conservation encompasses overall repair and renovation work, as well as the addition of a contemporary exhibition room and storage rooms, remodelling to improve accessibility in the main building, equipment renewal, refurbishment of the courtyard, installation of new amenities, replacement of broken tiles, and roof maintenance. Architects reworked the circulation framework by digging down the front plaza on the west side to create a slope, transforming the basement, which was originally used to store shoes, into a majestic new entrance. In addition to the spatial changes, the team of architects has recorded the entire process so as to make future restoration more efficient.
