Good Mountains, Good Water
The Chuan Malt Whiskey Distillery is located on Mount Emei, one China’s four sacred mountains, and the location serves two discrete but complementary purposes. First, it was chosen so the distillery would benefit from the natural environment - the good mountains and good water of the surrounding areas, as the Chinese would say. Second, it was designed to be an experience travel destination for whiskey connoisseurs, built in harmony with the landscape, and reflecting the philosophical beliefs that govern interaction between human beings and nature. Three long buildings where the whisky is distilled feature gradually descending rooflines and reclaimed clay tiles as a tribute to vernacular architecture. The two buildings that welcome visitors are built upon circle and square geometric principles. The round tasting building is partially sunken, with five subterranean tasting rooms around a domed courtyard with a waterfall coming from the oculus, and the upper part of the dome has three concentric brick rings, echoing the silhouette of Mount Emei.
