Greater than the Sum of ITS Parts
To transform facets of a living culture and an evolving identity into an immersive experience is more than clever, creative digital technology, and requires particular curatorial and cultural expertise to engage visitors. Using an RFID waistband, visitors to the Singapo(ren), a permanent exhibition at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre, get into a virtual conversation with the exhibits, vote in surveys, unlock memories, and play games, so that the dynamic displays are customised for each visitor, who is taken through five zones from the past to the future. Although the overall look is contemporary, each zone’s materials and background relate to different times and content. At the end of the visit, visitors are given a personalised snapshot of their cultural footprint along with recommendations for future cultural experiences, and the insights drawn from their responses guide and continually refresh the exhibition, keeping it on the pulse of culture. The results of visitors' input are projected onto a wall in the gallery, showing how everyone has the collective power to influence the future.
